Pictured here are leaders Fidel Castro and Nikita Khrushchev. They are standing in front of Vladimir Lenin’s tomb, triumphantly holding up their joint hands. It is clear they are friendly. This photo demonstrates how close the Soviet Union and Cuba were, and how they continued to be for a long time afterwards. As the photographer could not be found, it is unclear what their intentions were behind taking this photograph.
The amicable relations between the Soviet Union and Cuba frustrated the United States. Images such as these demonstrate why it should have come as no surprise Cuba was willing to aid the Soviet Union by storing Soviet nuclear missiles within their borders.
