Nikita Khrushchev, a high-ranking member of the Soviet Union, wrote a letter to President John F. Kennedy regarding relations between Cuba and the Soviet Union. The United States was unhappy with the amicable relations between the two.
Here, Khrushchev calmly explains that the Soviet Union will continue to aid Cuba, regardless of the opinions of the United States. He says it is ridiculous that the United States finds Cuba to be a terrifying enemy, and that they are simply unable to accept having socialist neighbors.
“Mr. President, I should like to repeat what I had already written to you in my earlier messages — that the Soviet Government has given economic assistance to the Republic of Cuba, as well as arms, because Cuba and the Cuban people were constantly under the continuous threat of an invasion of Cuba.”
